Thank you for coming, and thank you to the Grotto for hosting us!

The idea behind this concert was introduced by our founder, Laurel Barnum:

Our concert today centers around the theme of reflection. Our concert title, “Be Still”, is a piece we are premiering, written by one of our singers, Thomas Proctor.

The Lenten season is a time of reflection and sacrifice. Traditions around the world and across different faiths are imploring us to be still and reflect before the welcoming of the spring and rebirth ahead. What is greater than ourselves and how can each of us turn inward with an eye towards the hope that follows?

We invite you to let the words and music we share today sink deep into your hearts. Maybe even close your eyes. May that inner peace we cultivate together today grow to our closest relationships, our community, our nation, and to our world.”

Humanis Sing for Peace (pronounced hju ˈmæ nəs) is a small, primarily a cappella ensemble of about 18 singers comprised of soloists and music professionals from the Pacific Northwest. Our repertoire spans centuries and genres—from early music to contemporary works. Frequently performed composers include Tavener, Poulenc, Stanford, Ticheli, Rheinberger, Byrd, and local artists like Joan Szymko and Humanis member David Foley. We also perform arrangements of folk, traditional, and popular songs.

We have performed regularly at The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights, partnered with Cascadia Composers, and participated in Earth Day celebrations. We’ve hosted benefit concerts supporting causes such as immigration justice, refugee support, environmental activism, and homelessness, raising funds and awareness for nonprofits like IRCO, Family Promise, and IMIrJ. Our outreach also includes performances in schools, retirement communities, and studio recordings of new works by local composers.
